Among the extensions to the Longshore and Harbor Worker's Compensation Act (LHWCA), is the Nonappropriated Fund Instrumentalities Act (NAFIA) found in 5 U.S.C. section 8171. Congress enacted the NAFIA in 1952 to define the status of employees working for NAF at U.S. military bases in the United States and overseas. Because NAF employees are not paid from funds appropriated by Congress, they are not entitled to coverage under the Federal Employees Compensation Act (FECA). NAF employees who are currently receiving benefits under the LHWCA, or who are injured at work, should contact their local NAF Human Resources Office.
Several NAF employers have central numbers which their NAF employees may call to ask questions about a job-related injury.
