What To Do If You Are Injured

If you are injured at work, you may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits provided under the Federal Employees' Compensation Act (FECA). DCPAS provides oversight of implementation of this program for the DOD civilian workforce. The Department of Labor’s Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs (OWCP) administers the FECA program for the Federal government. Federal employees have certain rights and responsibilities in filing for these benefits under FECA; identified in the Employee Rights and Responsibilities Fact Sheet.

Federal Employees Rights and Responsibilities
1. Report any work-related injury immediately to your supervisor.

2. You have the right to choose your treating physician.

3. File Form CA-1, Federal Employee's Notice of Traumatic Injury and Claim for Continuation of Pay/Compensation, or Form CA-2, Federal Employee's Notice of Occupational Disease and Claim for Compensation, using the process required by your employing agency.

4. If you feel you need to seek medical treatment for a traumatic injury, ask your supervisor how to obtain Agency authorization for treatment using Form CA-16. You are required to provide the name of the treating physician or hospital for the Agency to authorize treatment using Form CA-16.

5. If you are unsure as to which form to file or how to file, ask your supervisor how to contact the Agency Injury Compensation Specialist. This Specialist will help you through the filing process and answer any questions regarding filing or workers’ compensation benefits.

6. The Department of Labor Employees’ Compensation Operation & Management Portal (ECOMP) can be used to file electronically workers’ compensation claims. For more about ECOMP, visit the ECOMP website and register for an ECOMP account.

7. Keep your supervisor informed of your ability to work and any work restrictions provided by your treating physician.

8. Provide additional information when requested by your Supervisor, Agency Injury Compensation Specialist, or Department of Labor.
